Course Pre-requisites:

1. Qualifications in Psychology, Counselling or Social Work, or equivalent. You must be eligible for membership of CAPA, Psychologists Registration Board, AASW or equivalent.

2. A high level of basic counselling skills is assumed and will be assessed at an interview. Please note that this is an Advanced Counselling course. Hence, although no prior knowledge of the Psychodynamic model is assumed, a high level of basic skills (eg Egan's model/ Rogerian counselling) is necessary.

Counselling:

All counselling is done on behalf of Mandala Community Counselling Service, a volunteer run counselling service. One of our aims is to provide high quality counselling to clients who would be unable to afford private counselling. Mandala maintains a high quality of counselling for our clients who are generally very disadvantaged, have very difficult life problems and who therefore require a high level of counselling skills.

To be considered for this training course you must already be a qualified counsellor or psychologist with a high level of basic counselling skills. The Advanced Training course ensures that Mandala can offer the best quality of counselling to disadvantaged clients.

Supervision:

We believe that the real learning of the psychotherapy process starts when a trainee counsellor starts seeing clients and is participating in supervision. The professional supervision provides excellent counselling skills and opportunities for development. The two year commitment to counselling and supervision ensures that trainees learn the invaluable skills of treating clients in an on-going counselling setting.

Dates:

Part 1: Trainees attend seven full-day training sessions held every fortnight on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Trainees must attend all sessions. Sessions dates are August 13th, August 27th, September 10th, September 24th, October 8th, October 22, November 5th, and a 2 hour assessment session on November 12th.  Attendance to ALL sessions is compulsory.

Part 2: Trainees who pass Part 1 will begin seeing clients and join a supervision group at a later time. Times of counselling (2 hours per week) are open to negotiation, according to availability of premises. Supervision group times (2 - 3 hours per fortnight) are by negotiation with the Clinical Supervisor and the group.
